The Data Vacuum in Vietnamese Table Tennis – A Tactical Perspective

Have you ever entered a sports hall where everyone just watches, with no one taking notes? I did, at the national table tennis championship final, where two young players put on a brilliant performance. While the audience cheered, I sat silently asking: those cross-court kills, net-edge hits, direct service winners – none of these appeared anywhere. We witnessed a great match, but had no way to explain why it was great beyond subjective feeling. Vietnamese table tennis has improved in recent years, winning SEA Games medals. But looking at the larger Asian picture, we remain on the periphery. One reason, I believe, is not physical or technical – it's how we analyze the game. I've spent over two decades following football, where data has become a common language. While football uses expected goals, pressing intensity, and formation spacing, table tennis still relies on the naked eye. This creates a vast gap – a gap invisible on a diagram, but decisive in a sport's progress. We need to start building a basic data culture – recording matches, counting serve points, errors at deuce. But we must be careful not to lose the intangible creativity and 'guts' of players. Let data be a mirror, not a prison.
